A number of enzymes in animal organisms is capable of transforming the foreign substance, soluble in fats, so as to make them soluble in water. These enzymes are associated with membranes, since the endoplasmic reticulum is basically a membrane composed of lipids and proteins. The presence of enzymes within a lipoprotein matrix is \u200b\u200bcritical, since lipophilic substances tend to break down into a lipid membrane, the site of biotransformation.
When the liver is removed in the laboratory and homogenized, the tubular endoplasmic reticulum breaks up and fragments membrane rupture to form micro vesicles. They are referred to the microsomes, which can be isolated by a process of centrifuging the liver, so homogenized.
